2012 Italy & Cruise
Arriving in Barcelona, the MSC Fantasia was just ahead of us.
An airplane approaching the airport is barely visible through the murk.

We opted for the Gaudi's Experience tour, which took us by bus
through the city to Park GŁell for a walking tour,
then to the Sagrada Familia "Sand Cathedral".

A few shots from the bus gave us a bit of an idea of Gaudi's architectural approach.
Apparently his architecture professor stated that one day Gaudi
would be known either as a genius or as deranged (or something like that).
The guide explained that Gaudi's objective was to make man-made
structures resemble and meld with nature as closely as possible.
With this in mind, it seemed to us that he achieved his objective,
and that the result is not as "deranged" as we had previously imagined.

GŁell park was conceived as a garden city for 60 families,
but because of its distance from the then city centre,
only two families bought property there, including Gaudi himself.
Now it is a park visited by many people every day.
Gaudi's objective of making his work look like and meld with
nature is certainly achieved in the structures in the park.

The rest area / lookout features curved seating around the perimeter because
Gaudi felt that the concave curvature encouraged people to commnunicate.

Some of the art work below the lookout.

From the park we travelled to the Sagrada Familia, the "Sand Cathedral" conceived
by Gaudi, and described by models but with no architectural drawings.
Work on the cathedral has progressed to the point that it was consecrated
in November 2011 so can now be used as a place of worship.
This soaring, light-filled structure is unlike any other cathedral we have seen - it really is awesome.

The model of the cathedral, the outside with cranes still present, and the soaring, light-filled interior.

On the way back to the ship we saw the entrance to a huge park,
a fortress-like building with sunlit towers,
and a cruise ship from another line.

The sea looks pretty calm as we settle in for a day at sea enroute to Casablanca.
