After our visit to Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadaloupe, we were sitting in the lounge
watching the crew undergo their regular safety drill when I heard the announcement
to lower the starboard lifeboats. At first I assumed this was pretend, but then
I realized that it was for real, so I grabbed my camera and
made for the promenade deck (the lifeboats hang just above this deck).
By the time I got there, most of the lifeboats were in the lagoon on
the starboard side of the ship, but I got to watch the last ones descend
and all return.|
This was the first time I had ever seen the lifeboats on a cruise ship actually being lowered to the water. A lady also watching said it might be in preparation for the U.S. Coast Guard inspection the next day at St. Thomas, USVI.
Turned out she was right. The next day the same thing occurred and the captain later thanked and congratulated the crew for their excellent performance in the Coast Guard test.
