Today we had a day excursion to Tianshan Tianchi National
Park, a highland lake where the legend says|
the Queen Mother of the West invited King Mu to the feast, or that the lake served as her foot washing basin.
|The reception area was a large building, with a fleet of buses waiting to take tourists up to the lake.|
The buses took us up a winding mountain road to a staging area.|
At the staging area, "golf carts" were available to take us the rest of the way (about a twenty minute walk).|
Signs indicated the way to the Complaints Office and the Medical Clinic.
The lake reminded us a bit of Lake Louise, with snow-capped mountains
in the background.|
The temperature was cool enough to require a sweater,
a welcome relief from the|
heat of the rest of China. A painting in an artists' shop gave an idea of the autumn scene.
Heading back to Urumqi we were amazed by the high rise construction along the way.|
They always seem to build a bunch of buildings, not just one at a time.
Back in town, we visited the International Grand Bazar Xinjiang.|
Marg was impressed by the displays of scarves.
I was impressed by the size of the fluorescent bulbs in the shops.
Street scenes near the bazar showed an elevated street, pedestrians|
dodging cars, cars parked on the sidewalk and sidewalk vendors.
A public washroom caught my attention, with neon Idle sign to show availability.
I understand Toronto|
has a couple (cost about $400,000 ea), which are to be traded in to save the Bixi programme.
The street in the market area needs repair, but that does not bother the vendors.|
The statue shows the noodle twisting technique that is always too fast to catch on camera.
Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) occupies the centre of the street, similar to the forthcoming
LRT's (Light Rapid Transit?) in Toronto.|
A huge TV screen displays ads, including one for Coca Cola featuring dragons and monsters (but I missed it).
Tonight we sleep in the Mirage Hotel Urumqi, and tomorrow|
we fly to Chongqing to embark on our Yangtze river cruise ship.
