|After a short overnight train ride and an early breakfast in a restaurant, we had some time to see the town of Tianshui. Scooter style trucks and sidewalk markets contrasted with wide streets and modern busses.|
|We saw a gateway, some pig skins used to float rafts, and a museum, before I gave out for a rest with my shoes off. A policeman came along and pointed to my shoes, so I put them on and a young lad playing in the area with his grandparents looked confused.|
Then it was off to visit the Maijishan Grotto, 194 cave shrines
of the "Gallery of Oriental Sculpture", carved into a vertical
mountain cliff near Tianshui.
The caves provide shelter for 7200 stone and clay figurines
and 1300 sq m (13,000 sq ft) of murals.|
|Our first view of the challenge at hand came after walking up a fairly long slope from the bus, having declined the camel rides. Access to the caves has been built for tourists. Just one
inconvenient passage to get through, but lots of stairs way up there!
|Following the visit to the caves, we visited the National Fuximiao of China, designated Temple to worship Fuxi, the first of the three sovereigns of ancient China. The guide explained the mathematical intricacy of the round table, but it escapes me at the moment.|
Killing time while awaiting the 10:30PM boarding of our train,
we saw a man playing a musical instrument sort of like a violin
but with only one string (I think). He attracted a few listeners.|
There seemed to be no water flowing over the dam in the river, but there was water downstream, so perhaps some leakage. Paddle boats took advantage of the calm water upstream, and there was a stone monument of some sort on the river bank with high rise buildings in the background.

|Later in the evening we headed to the RR station to await our train for Lanzhou.|
