Leaving our hotel in Turpan for the bus trip to Urumqi, we snapped the breakfast buffet and the lobby.|
We stopped at a bank for currency and noted yet another broad street with service lanes, wide sidewalks and bushes for separation.
|En route to Urumqi we visited the ruins of Gaochang, an ancient buried city built on an island in the river for protection from enemies.|
After walking around the ruins in the heat, Andrew treated us to watermelon.|
As we left, we noted folks washing their cars in the river.|
We visited an ancient irrigation system, which provides water for local
agriculture via a series of|
collector wells and trenches. The model of the tunnel digger indicates the back breaking work involved.
On the bus, we hit a traffic jam waiting for the toll booth.|
Toll roads are common, but the tolls are collected manually.
Another view of the right-of-way being built for the high speed train.
And some of the thousands of wind turbines that dot China.
In this area, I guess no one says "Not in my back yard".
Our dinner table as we were ready to leave.|
There was always much more food than we could eat.
