Homeward Bound via Zurakowski Park

Posted 2016-09-26

Sunday morning there was a buffet brunch in the same ballroom where we danced Saturday evening.
Enthusiasm at brunch was somewhat subdued compared to that of Saturday evening.

Our total photo activity Sunday morning before departure.

We decided to take a route via the Algonquin Park area for our return from Ottawa to Toronto. In Barry's Bay we found Zurakowski Memorial park, which my cousin Bill had told me should not be missed. Janusz Zurakowski retired to Barry's Bay, where there is a large Polish community, after the Avro Arrow project was scrapped in 1959, and his Polish friends decided that they needed a park to commemorate their famous war hero and test pilot. Cousin Bill was right - it is a great display of Janusz's feats and of the Avro Arrow CF-105 which he test flew before the project was cancelled.

Avro Arrow first flight, Arrow scrapped, and key aircraft in Zura's life.
The third panel says he took a CF-100 Mark 4 supersonic in December 1952,
despite the Avro engineers saying it was impossible. I thought so, too!

From Barry's Bay we continued to Bancroft to spend Sunday night at the Sword Inn, where we had reservations. At $158 with taxes, more expensive than we usually choose, but we did not find too many alternatives in our internet search of that area. Our stay was quite pleasant, with no complaints at all. As is our wont, we took photos as sort of a personal review of the facility.

We were on the first floor of the two storey building, with seven stairs up from the parking area.

There was a small fridge and a microwave in the closet area, and a table with two chairs
to make eating-in quite feasible, although we found the included breakfast fully adequate
The Queen bed had a thick mattress. The bathroom intruded into a corner of the room.

The flat-screen TV had lots of channels. We could watch it from the chairs, a plus for us. The breakfast
room in the office building had about half a dozen tables and a fully adequate self-serve breakfast counter.

The third weekend in September is a bit early for leaf peeping, but on our way south
to Belleville we saw a a bit of a precursor of what will come in the next few weeks.
That's it for our take on SPAADS 2016 Ottawa.
