In years gone by there was a Benedict family picnic every summer in Cobourg's Victoria Park, but the tradition faded away decades ago. Actually, when we were there as children, it was called the Ferguson reunion, Ferguson being Margaret (Grandma) Benedict's mother's family name. Can't remember when it became the Benedict reunion. Then in 1995 Hazel Harry, Myrtle's youngest daughter, suggested that the family picnic be revived, and so it was, with a good turnout from all the descendants.

The Benedict family reunion then took place each year for several years, organized in turn by the families of Myrtle, Evelyn and Gertrude. In 1998 it was decided that the 1999 reunion would be just for the first cousins, to organize a special event for the year 2000 millenium picnic. The 1999 organizing event turned out to be rather fun, with great expectations decided upon for the year 2000 picnic. The great expectations turned out to be a little more difficult to arrange than had been expected, so the special event ended up pretty much the same as previous reunions, lots of fun but with undue organizing efforts. In 2001 and 2002 the reunion was not held, but in 2003 Dave and Kathie Carr hosted a reunion par excellence at their home in Whitby.

Since the 2003 reunion at Dave & Kathie Carr's house, the Benedict reunion has included only the first cousins, i.e. the children of Frank and Margaret's four daughters, and their spice, and any offspring who wish to attend:

Myrtle White (Benedict)-> Evelyn White, Marian Mingham, Muriel Yost, Hazel Harry, Bill White and Pat.
Evelyn Lynn (Benedict)-> Bill Lynn and Marg, Sue Lynn and Chris Foot.
Gertrude Carr (Benedict)-> Margaret Jean Carr, Fran Carr and Ron Jay, David Carr and Kathie.
For those who find it strange that a Benedict reunion includes no one named Benedict, perhaps an update is in order. The event is a reunion of the descendants of Frank Herbert Benedict who married Margaret Alexandra Martin in 1901. They farmed Cedar Dale farm north of Cobourg. They had four daughters, Myrtle, Margaret Evelyn, Mildred and Gertrude; thus the lack of descendants named Benedict. The four daughters and their husbands are deceased.

The Benedict Daughters
Myrtle married Russell White and they had six children, Evelyn, Marion and Muriel (twins), Milford, Hazel and Bill.
    Evelyn has no children.

Marion married Norman Mingham and they had one daughter, Myriam. (They live in England.)
Myriam married Peter Jackson and they had one daughter: Rebecca.

Muriel married Nick Yost and they had no children.

Milford married Marjorie McBride and they had four children: Paul, Douglas, Ray and Janet.
Paul married Jewel-Lee Monk and they had three children: Kerri-Lee, Russell and Graham.
Kerri-Lee married David Groager and they had two children: McKenna and Morgan.
Douglas married Brenda-Lea Haines and they had four children: Peter, Gloria, Timothy and Sarah-Lea.
Ray married Kim ?? in 2007. Kim had two children.
Janet married Jim Vanne and they had no children.

Hazel married Doug Harry and they had three children: John (d. 1969), Catherine and Mark.
Catherine married Ken Bradley and they had two children: Stephen and Trevor.
Mark married Karen Coughlin and they had two children: Emily and Madeleine.

Bill married Patricia Nicholson and they had no children.

Margaret Evelyn (called Evelyn) married Gordon Lynn and they had two children: William (Bill) and Elizabeth (Sue).
Bill married Marg Belfry and they had two children: Heather-Anne and Brian.
Heather-Anne married John Hubbell and they had two children: Raya and Jay.
Brian married Janet Fryer and they had two children: Miranda and Benedict (so there is a Benedict, but not the family name).

Sue married Chris Foot and they had two children: Erin and Angela.
Erin married Jon S. and they had three children: Finn, Liv and Lars.
      Angela is not married.

Mildred married Jim Moore and they had no children.

Gertrude married David Carr and they had three children: Margaret Jean, Frances and David.
Margaret Jean married Cliff Vardy and they had eight children: Deborah, Kim, Darwin, Wynne, Cindy, Trudy, Dawn and Karen.
They had a total of some 24 children and a number of grandchildren (great grandchildren to Margaret Jean).

Frances married Ron Jay and they had two children: Brenda and Brian.
Brenda had two children: Emily and Kendal.
Brian married Marie-Hélène and they had three children: Elizabeth, Justin and Isabelle.
David married Kathie ? and they had no children.

So there you have it. The only Benedicts in the "cuzzens by the dozens" are Margaret Evelyn's son William Benedict Lynn and his grandson Benedict Thomas Lynn. Perhaps remarkable is the fact that all of the grandchildren of Frank and Margaret Benedict are still alive except Milford who died in 1996.

For a detailed descendants listing, see Descendants of Daniel Benedict and Louisa Hubbell. Frank Benedict is in the third generation, the son of Josiah Benedict and Emily Merrill.
